Sonic Gems Collection was a compilation for the PS2, GameCube and the PC. It contains some of the most exotic games in the Sonic series. SegaSonic the Hedgehog (yes that is a game) was originally meant to be in the compilation however was omitted due to the controlling style of the original game (a trackball).

Knuckles Chaotix was also intended to appear, but was omitted for unknown reasons, although the bonus art for it remains. Finally, Sonic Eraser was also meant to appear but was omitted from the final release. It is still on the disc however, and can be found by modifying the game's files. In order to lower the game's ESRB rating, Streets of Rage was omitted from non-Japanese versions of the game.

The reviews for this game were mixed with critics praising the inclusion of Sonic CD within the game. However, they were disappointed by the lack of the Streets of Rage games. The game sold extremely well and earned player choice status.
